Gold medals have been harder to come by than usual for India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, given the smaller, streamlined 10-sport programme that has dropped several of the country’s traditional medal-heavy events. Even so, Indian athletes have delivered some memorable gold-medal moments so far.
The first gold of the Games for India came from weightlifter Mirabai Chanu on Day 3 (July 26). Competing in the women’s 48kg category, the Olympic silver medallist lifted a combined 190kg, setting a Commonwealth record in the snatch with 85kg before a Games record clean and jerk of 105kg. It was her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold, a feat matched by only one other Indian, wrestler Vinesh Phogat.
The second gold arrived a day later and carried special significance. Sharmila Dhankar won the women’s shot put F57 final in para athletics with a best throw of 9.81m, becoming India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medallist in para athletics and ending a 20-year wait for the country in the discipline. Her win also carries a powerful personal backstory, having overcome domestic hardship on her way to the top of the podium in Glasgow.
The third confirmed gold came on Day 6 (July 29), when para athlete Dilip Mahadu Gavit produced a stunning run in the men’s 100m T47 final, clocking a Games record time of 10.71 seconds. His compatriot Mohammed Basil M followed him home to complete an Indian 1-2 finish, one of the standout moments of the Games so far for the Indian contingent.
According to the latest official standings, India’s gold medal count for these Games has climbed into the top 3 gold contributions for the country, with weightlifting and para athletics leading the way. Some individual results from smaller events are still being finalised, so the complete list will keep growing as more medal ceremonies are confirmed.
Looking ahead, India’s best remaining chances for gold lie with Neeraj Chopra, who begins his javelin throw campaign with qualification on July 30 ahead of the final on August 1, and with the boxing contingent, where six fighters have already reached the semifinals and will look to convert their guaranteed medals into gold. Track cyclists and the remaining weightlifters also have events left on the calendar before the Games close on August 2.
