Lovlina Borgohain’s Commonwealth Games journey has taken an unexpected and welcome turn in Glasgow. The Olympic medallist has already secured at least a bronze medal in the women’s 75kg category, and she did it without throwing a single punch.
A Surprise Bye Into the Semifinals
Because only five boxers entered the women’s 75kg category at Glasgow 2026, the draw allowed just one quarterfinal bout, between England’s Mary Kate Smith and Nigeria’s Patricia Mbata. The remaining three boxers, including Lovlina, Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree, and Tuvalu’s Tarona Taafaki, advanced directly to the semifinals. Since the Commonwealth Games awards bronze medals to both losing semifinalists, Lovlina’s place in the last four alone guarantees her a podium finish.
A Different Story From Past Games
This marks a big change from Lovlina’s previous two Commonwealth Games appearances. She competed in the 69kg category at both Gold Coast 2018, where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champion Sandy Ryan, and Birmingham 2022, where she lost her opening bout. Speaking after learning of her direct semifinal spot, Lovlina said she did not expect to reach the medal stage this early, since her past two campaigns had required her to win four or five bouts just to get close to a medal.
What’s Next
Lovlina will face Tuvalu’s Tarona Taafaki in the semifinals on July 31, with a place in the gold medal match on the line. A win there would guarantee her at least a silver and a shot at gold on August 1.
Completing a Rare Medal Set
A Commonwealth Games medal, in any colour, will complete Lovlina’s collection across every major multi-sport event she is eligible to compete in, adding to medals she has already won at the Olympics and the Asian Games. Few Indian athletes can claim that kind of consistency across the sport’s biggest stages.
Beyond her own campaign, Lovlina also carried the baton for India during the Games’ opening ceremony, alongside flag bearer Mirabai Chanu, underlining her stature as one of the faces of the Indian contingent in Glasgow.
Whatever colour medal Lovlina Borgohain ends up with, her Commonwealth Games 2026 journey already stands out as one of the more remarkable storylines of the Glasgow edition.
