The Majors Remain the Gold Standard
For sheer scale, it’s hard to beat a Majors weekend. London’s course, which ends with runners funneling onto The Mall past Buckingham Palace, and New York’s five-borough route are both built for spectators as much as runners. Sydney’s newest major, added to the series in 2024, uses the city’s Harbour Bridge and Opera House as a backdrop, and its 30 August date gives fans a rare Southern Hemisphere spring marathon to build a trip around, something we detail further in our World Marathon Majors guide.
Beyond the Majors
- Valencia Marathon in Spain is widely regarded as the world’s fastest course for a personal best, thanks to its flat, point-to-point layout
- The Cape Town Marathon shifted its 2026 date to late May specifically to take advantage of cooler, calmer conditions for both runners and spectators
- Shanghai Marathon continues to grow, with organizers discussing expansion to accommodate more international entrants
What Makes a Marathon Worth Watching
The best spectator marathons tend to share a few traits: a compact, landmark-heavy course, multiple viewing points reachable by public transport, and a strong elite women’s field worth tracking mile by mile. London’s 2026 women’s race, won by Tigst Assefa in 2:15:41, is a good example of how a major’s elite race can define the entire weekend’s storyline.
