The Indian women’s cricket team delivered the country’s first gold medal of Asian Games 2026, successfully defending the title they first won at the sport’s Games debut in Hangzhou.
## The Road to Gold
India’s campaign in Aichi-Nagoya included a strong group-stage win over hosts Japan before an emphatic 114-run semi-final victory over Bangladesh, powered by Shafali Verma’s explosive 49-ball century. India then beat Sri Lanka in the final to complete the title defence, delivering the country’s first gold medal of these Games.
## Key Contributors
Alongside Verma’s standout semi-final innings, senior batter Smriti Mandhana played a key role throughout the tournament in India’s top order. Our dedicated update on her individual campaign covers her contribution to the wider squad effort.
## Why This Title Defence Matters
Successfully retaining the Asian Games title, rather than just winning it once, cements India’s status as the dominant force in Asian women’s T20 cricket at the continental level, building on the team’s rich recent form across white-ball formats.
## A Different Kind of Pressure
Unlike bilateral series or ICC events, Asian Games gold contributes directly to India’s overall national medal tally, adding a layer of significance that previous squad members have described as uniquely meaningful compared to other cricket competitions.
## The Bigger Campaign Context
This gold medal contributed directly to India’s early medal tally at these Games, alongside strong results in shooting and a historic first MMA medal from Suchika Tariyal. Our full medal tally breakdown covers the wider Indian campaign.
## The Bottom Line
Back-to-back Asian Games cricket gold, built on genuine depth across the batting order and a standout breakout innings from Shafali Verma, gives Indian women’s cricket another significant achievement to add to an already successful period for the format.
