India has fielded a strong and varied athletics squad at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, with 32 athletes, 22 men and 10 women, competing across track and field events at Scotstoun Stadium, alongside an 11-member para-athletics contingent.
The Big Names to Know
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra headlines the squad as one of the sport’s most recognisable stars, having previously won gold at Gold Coast 2018. Long-distance runners Gulveer Singh and Parul Chaudhary carry India’s medal hopes in the endurance events, while long jumper Murali Sreeshankar and shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor add further strength in the field events.
Standout Performers So Far
High jumper Sarvesh Kushare has already delivered one of India’s best individual performances of the Games, winning silver after clearing 2.25m on the opening day of athletics competition. He arrived in Glasgow in career-best form, having broken the national high jump record and finished third at a Diamond League meeting earlier in the season. Gulveer Singh backed up that result with a silver in the men’s 10,000m, while Murali Sreeshankar added another silver in the long jump.
A Notable Event Switch
Decathlete Tejaswin Shankar, who won bronze in the high jump at the previous edition of the Games, has since shifted his focus to the decathlon, competing across ten disciplines rather than a single event. His versatility adds an interesting subplot to India’s athletics campaign this year.
Chasing History in the Triple Jump
Triple jumpers Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu are looking to continue a proud Indian tradition in the event, following the historic one-two finish by Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker at the previous Commonwealth Games, the first time two Indian athletes had topped the podium together in the sport at the Games.
A Breakthrough Story in Hurdles
Elsewhere, Tejas Shirse made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to qualify for a Commonwealth Games men’s 110m hurdles final, clocking a strong time in his heat before a mid-race injury in the final cut short his medal bid.
Why This Squad Stands Out
With India’s athletics programme having won 36 medals historically at the Commonwealth Games, this squad’s mix of established stars and emerging talent gives it a genuine chance to add to that tally before the Games conclude on August 1.
