India’s athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 got off to a promising start when Sarvesh Kushare won a silver medal in the men’s high jump final at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.

Kushare cleared 2.25m cleanly before three unsuccessful attempts at 2.28m ended his bid for gold. Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford also cleared 2.25m, but needed fewer attempts to do so, giving him the gold medal on a countback rule. England’s Kimani Jack completed the podium with bronze after clearing 2.20m.

Kushare’s silver capped a genuine breakthrough year. Earlier in the season, he became only the fourth Indian athlete to finish on the podium at a Diamond League meeting, placing third in Monaco. He also broke Tejaswin Shankar’s eight-year-old national high jump record with a leap of 2.31m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, signalling that he had arrived as a genuine international medal contender heading into Glasgow.

A Commonwealth Games medal on the opening day of athletics competition gave India early momentum in a sport where the country has a proud history, having won 36 medals overall at the Games, including 15 gold.
