India’s 39-medal haul in Glasgow had many contributors, but a handful of athletes stood well above the rest of the pack.
Mirabai Chanu – the constant
Mirabai Chanu opened India’s account with gold in the women’s 48kg weightlifting, lifting a Games-record 190kg to win her third consecutive Commonwealth title. At 31, it made her the first Indian weightlifter to win three straight golds at the Games, and only added to a legacy that already included silver at Glasgow 2014.
The boxing squad
No single athlete carried Indian boxing – seven different boxers won gold. Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Priya Ghanghas, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal combined for a record haul that no nation has matched in Commonwealth Games boxing history. Jaismine Lamboria’s win over defending champion Michaela Walsh was particularly notable, adding a Commonwealth title to the World Championship gold she won in 2025. The full breakdown is in our boxing results and medal winners guide.
Neeraj Chopra and Gulveer Singh on the track
Neeraj Chopra returned from the injury that ruled him out of Birmingham 2022 to win silver in the javelin, while training partner Yash Vir Singh claimed a stunning bronze on his Games debut. Distance runner Gulveer Singh had an equally impressive week, becoming the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games with silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 5000m.
Elsewhere, judoka Asmita Dey won India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games judo gold, and Tejaswin Shankar became India’s first decathlon medallist at the Games. Several of these athletes are still in their twenties, which is why our piece on young Indian athletes to watch is worth a look if you want to know who might lead the charge at Ahmedabad 2030.
