India has competed at the Commonwealth Games since 1934 and has built one of the most storied medal histories in the event, sitting fourth on the all-time medal table with 564 medals, comprising 203 gold, 190 silver, and 171 bronze, behind only Australia, England, and Canada.
The undisputed high point of India’s Commonwealth Games history came at the 2010 Games in New Delhi, when the country hosted the event for the first time. India won a record 101 medals, including 39 gold, 26 silver, and 36 bronze, to finish second on the overall medal table, its highest-ever position at any edition. It remains the only time India has crossed the 100-medal mark at the Games, and the achievement is widely regarded as the benchmark against which every subsequent Indian squad is measured.
The 2018 Gold Coast Games stand out as India’s best performance on foreign soil. The Indian contingent won 66 medals, including 26 gold, 20 silver, and 20 bronze, finishing third overall behind Australia and England. Wrestlers alone contributed a record 12 medals, including five gold, the best tally by any country’s wrestling squad at that edition, while shooting and weightlifting also delivered heavily.
India finished fourth at the 2022 Birmingham Games with 61 medals, comprising 22 gold, 16 silver, and 23 bronze, a slight dip from Gold Coast but still one of the country’s strongest overall showings. That edition saw Mirabai Chanu open the medal account with weightlifting gold, and further wins across boxing, table tennis, badminton, and wrestling rounded out a well-balanced haul.
Shooting has historically been India’s single biggest medal-winning sport at the Commonwealth Games, contributing 135 medals across the editions in which it featured, before being dropped from the programme starting with Birmingham 2022. Weightlifting (133 medals) and wrestling (114 medals) rank close behind as India’s next most successful disciplines historically.
At an individual level, pistol shooter Jaspal Rana sits at the top of India’s all-time Commonwealth Games medal list with 15 medals, nine of them gold, accumulated across multiple editions before shooting’s exclusion from the programme.
With the Glasgow 2026 edition featuring a far smaller 10-sport programme that has dropped shooting, wrestling, badminton, and hockey, matching the heights of 2010 or 2018 was always going to be a tall order for the current Indian squad. Even so, the historical record shows just how far India’s Commonwealth Games story has come since its first medal, a wrestling bronze at the 1934 London Games.
