India’s grip on the world number one T20I ranking has been remarkably firm in recent years. September briefly interrupted that.
What Went Wrong
England moved to the top of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings on September 19 after whitewashing Sri Lanka 3-0, ending India’s run at the summit after just 57 days back in the top spot. The two sides had been running neck and neck on rating points for much of 2026.
How India Got It Back
- India beat Japan by two runs in a rain-curtailed five-over warm-up on September 22, detailed in our Iyer captaincy update
- The result was enough to lift India back above England on rating points
- Both nations remain extremely close, separated by fine margins built up over dozens of matches
The Longer History
India first reached number one in the T20I rankings in February 2022 and held the position for more than 1,600 consecutive days before briefly losing it in mid-2026. They reclaimed it after a series win in Zimbabwe in July, only for England to take it back in September.
Why the Ranking Battle Matters
Beyond prestige, the rankings reflect a genuinely tight race between the two most dominant white-ball nations of the moment. India’s underlying form, including the batting failures covered in our dedicated piece, shows why the margin has narrowed enough for England to compete for top spot at all.
