Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is still only 15, but 2026 has already been the year he turned from a domestic curiosity into a genuine part of India’s long-term cricketing conversation.
A year of record-breaking
Sooryavanshi’s year began with an outstanding Under-19 World Cup, where he finished as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer with 439 runs across seven matches and made 175 off 80 balls in the final against England, earning Player of the Tournament honours. He then produced a stunning IPL 2026 season for Rajasthan Royals, scoring 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.3, numbers that played a major role in the franchise reaching the playoffs.
The India debut
On 4 July, at 15 years and 97 days old, Sooryavanshi made his T20I debut against England, becoming the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket – breaking a record held by Sachin Tendulkar for 37 years. He scored 14 off 10 balls on debut, including two sixes, and has since featured in six T20Is, with two fifties and a top score of 81.
Where things stand now
Sooryavanshi has been part of India’s squad throughout the recent T20I series against Afghanistan, though he remained on the bench for the first two matches as captain Shreyas Iyer opted for more experienced options at the top of the order alongside Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. That’s a natural part of managing a 15-year-old’s development, even one with his talent.
Selectors and coaches alike appear content to bring him along steadily rather than force his hand into the XI purely on reputation. Given how quickly he has already rewritten record books in domestic cricket, the IPL and now international cricket, patience looks like the right long-term strategy – even if fans are eager to see more of him immediately.
