Since its first edition in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930, the Commonwealth Games has built a history full of records that took decades to fall – and athletes whose achievements have lasted even longer.
Records that refused to fall
Few marks illustrate the Games’ history better than Tanzania’s Filbert Bayi, who ran 3:32.16 in the men’s 1500m at Christchurch 1974 – a world record at the time. It stood as the Commonwealth Games record for 48 years, surviving every edition until Australia’s rival-turned-Briton Oliver Hoare finally broke it at Birmingham 2022 with a time of 3:30.12. Even longer-lived is Ian Thompson’s marathon time of 2:09:12, also set at Christchurch 1974, which remains the longest-standing record in current Commonwealth Games athletics – helped by the fact the marathon wasn’t part of the Glasgow 2026 programme at all.
The most decorated athlete ever
South African swimmer Chad le Clos became the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history at Glasgow 2026, winning his 21st career medal – seven gold, five silver and nine bronze across five editions since his debut at Delhi 2010. He moved past Australia’s Emma McKeon, who had held the record with 20 medals.
Nations that have defined the Games
Australia leads the all-time Commonwealth Games medal table, a position it only strengthened by topping the table again at Glasgow 2026, ahead of England and Canada. A tradition that keeps evolving
The Games have changed shape repeatedly – from a hastily reorganised, ten-sport Glasgow 2026 after an original host withdrew, to an expanded 15-to-17 sport programme planned for the centenary edition in Ahmedabad in 2030. That willingness to adapt, while still producing genuine record-breaking sport, is arguably the biggest reason the Commonwealth Games has lasted a century.
