With Glasgow 2026 done, attention already belongs to the next edition – and it’s a landmark one. The Commonwealth Games are returning to India for just the second time.
Host city and significance
Ahmedabad, also known as Amdavad, in the Indian state of Gujarat, was formally confirmed as host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games on 26 November 2025, following ratification at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow. The 2030 edition marks the 24th Commonwealth Games and the centenary of the movement, which began in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. It will be India’s second time hosting, following New Delhi in 2010.
What’s already confirmed
Commonwealth Sport has confirmed that the Games will feature between 15 and 17 sports, a notable expansion from Glasgow’s ten. Core sports already locked in include athletics and para athletics, swimming and para swimming, table tennis and para table tennis, bowls and para bowls, weightlifting and para powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing. Additional sports under consideration include archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon and wrestling – several of which would restore India’s traditional medal strengths, discussed in our comparison of Glasgow 2026 with earlier editions.
What it means for India
PT Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, called it a chance to “celebrate 100 years of the Commonwealth movement” while laying foundations for the next century. Ahmedabad is also home to the world’s largest cricket stadium, and India has separately expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics, suggesting the city’s sporting infrastructure push is part of a longer-term ambition.
